What’s the best time of the year to visit Canada?

Canada is a great choice for a solo tour at any time of year, and the best season depends on what you want to do.

Summer is ideal for hiking, wildlife viewing and city sightseeing, while autumn brings colourful foliage and crisp, clear days. Spring means longer light, thawed trails, and waterfalls in full flow, while winter offers snow-covered landscapes and cosy towns.

Do I need a visa to travel to Canada?

Visa requirements for Canada vary by nationality. Many visitors, including UK passport holders arriving by air, need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA), while others may require a visitor visa.

UK travellers should also review the UK Government’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) travel advice for Canada before booking. See the government’s official FTA for Canada.

Find out more about travel requirements and visas.

What is the currency used in Canada?

The Canadian Dollar (CAD) is the currency used across Canada.

What are the time zones in Canada?

Spanning 3,000 miles, Canada’s vast expanse is divided into six time zones. These include:

  • Toronto and Montréal: Eastern Time (GMT/UTC-5, or GMT/UTC-4 during daylight saving)

  • Calgary and Banff: Mountain Time (GMT/UTC-7, or GMT/UTC-6 during daylight saving)

  • Vancouver: Pacific Time (GMT/UTC-8, or GMT/UTC-7 during daylight saving)

Other Canadian time zones include Central Time, Atlantic Time, and Newfoundland Time.

Most regions observe daylight saving time from March to November, although some do not. Canada is usually 3.5 to 8 hours behind the UK, depending on location. For example, Eastern Time is typically 5 hours behind the UK.

Because the UK and Canada change their clocks on different dates, the time difference can briefly shift by one hour during parts of March and late October/early November.

What’s the food and drink like in Canada?

Canada’s food scene is shaped by Indigenous traditions and French and English influences, with regional specialities from coast to coast.

On your travels, expect to see simple, delicious dishes, including:

  • Poutine – A popular staple of crisp fries topped with squeaky cheese curds and rich gravy.

  • Bannock – An indigenous flatbread that’s baked or fried and served plain, sometimes with jam or alongside soups and stews.

  • Butter tarts – Sweet pastry tarts with a rich filling of sugar and syrup, and sometimes dotted with raisins or nuts.

  • Tourtière – A traditional French-Canadian meat pie that’s popular in Québec. It is typically made of pork or mixed meats seasoned with gentle spice.

  • Nanaimo bars – A British Columbia favourite, these no-bake bars feature a crumb base, creamy custard-style middle and sweet chocolate topping.

  • Peameal bacon sandwich – A Toronto classic of lean, cornmeal-crusted back bacon in a soft roll.

What should I pack for a solo tour to Canada?

For all months of the year, we recommend packing layers of clothing. This will keep you comfortable if the weather changes. Although most of Canada can enjoy warm summer temperatures, a waterproof top is always useful for the occasional rain shower.

Spring’s (March–May) weather is variable, and temperatures range from cool to mild. Medium-weight layers with a light coat are a good idea, as the days are warmer but evenings cooler, especially in early spring. A compact umbrella might also be useful.

Canadian summers (June–August) can range from pleasantly warm to surprisingly hot. Lightweight summer clothing is a must for staying comfortable, and it’s wise to pack a light layer for cooler evenings in the Rockies and coastal areas.

In Autumn (September–November), the weather is milder, and the temperatures begin to cool, with frost expected by late autumn. A warmer jacket is a must, as well as thicker socks and more medium-weight layers.

Winter (December–February) in Canada promises cold and snow in many provinces. In addition to an insulated coat and thermal layers, be sure to pack a warm hat, gloves, a scarf, and waterproof boots with good grip. Sunglasses are also a good idea to help with snow glare.

How long is the flight to Canada from the UK?

The flight from London to Toronto is usually around 7–8 hours non-stop. London to Calgary or Vancouver is typically 9–10½ hours without any layovers. However, flight times can vary by route, weather, and flight schedules.

What electrical plugs are used in Canada?

Canada uses Type A/B flat-pin plugs, 110–120V, 60Hz.

You’ll need a UK-to-North America adapter, and a small multi-USB charger can be handy as hotel sockets are sometimes limited.

What languages are spoken in Canada?

Canada’s official languages are English and French. You’ll hear more French in Québec (including Montréal and Québec City). In most other areas, English is more common.

Does Canada have a tipping culture?

In Canada, tipping is customary but discretionary. In restaurants, 15–20% for table service is typical if no service charge is shown, while rounding up the bill or an additional 10% is appreciated in cafés and bars.
