Your itinerary

Today you'll fly to San José via Houston.

The capital of Costa Rica, San José is a huge city that manages to retain a small-town feel and most of its architecture is less than a century old. Get to know more as we take a tour of the city and pause at the key sights of the National Theatre and the Gold Museum. You can explore further at your own pace this afternoon.

Tortuguero National Park, one of the country's most important ecological sites, is our destination on day 3. Meandering canals, surrounded by dense forest, stretch out into the Caribbean Sea. The vocal howler monkey is resident here along with crocodiles, caimans and the occasional turtle. We include visits to Tortuguero Village, to gain an insight into the local community, and the Caribbean Conservation Museum, to learn about sea turtles. We call at Braulio Carrillo National Park this afternoon.

Enjoy Tortuguero further at your leisure, with the chance to join a boat trip (subject to local conditions).

On day 5 we visit Muelle de San Carlos before reaching La Fortuna.

On day 6 experience the Hanging Bridges of Arenal, a network of bridges traversing the luscious rainforest, on our optional excursion. Discover different levels of the forest from the floor to the canopy and see a huge variety of flora and fauna. We'll also visit the town of La Fortuna. In the late afternoon, enjoy an optional visit to the Ecotermales Hot Springs where dinner is included. Day 7 allows a day at leisure. Alternatively, join our pre-bookable optional boat trip along the Peñas Blancas River, which runs through the Tilaran Mountain Range. We also include a rainforest walk with a Local Guide.

On day 8 we visit the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. Set up in the 1950s by American Quakers, today it's home to many species of birds and mammals. Lunch is included at a coffee farm, where you'll learn all about the process of making coffee, en route to Monteverde. Here we'll take a tour of the village followed by a talk from a descendent of the original Quaker settlers. Take an optional guided walk in the forest this evening.

On the morning of day 9 we visit a nature reserve, to learn all about the cloud forest and its importance in the ecosystem.

Today we journey along the Pan-American Highway and cross the border into Nicaragua, the largest country in Central America. Nicaragua has experienced a dramatic recent history, but is slowly opening up to tourism. In the late afternoon, we explore one of the traditional white villages that are characteristic of the area. They also offer fabulous views over the volcanic Apoyo Lagoon.

Like the rest of Nicaragua, Granada is not on most tourist trails. We include a walking tour around the city which boasts a magnificent location on the shores of Lake Nicaragua. After visiting the Convento San Francisco Museum, take an optional horse-drawn carriage ride to the lake where you'll enjoy a relaxing boat trip. Day 12 offers time to explore Granada at your own pace or to join our full-day pre-bookable optional excursion to Managua, the capital of Nicaragua, and Masaya Volcano National Park (subject to weather conditions).

Today we'll cross the border back into Costa Rica, driving to the coastal area of Jacó.

Our morning begins with an included visit to Carara National Park, a major centre for ecological research.

In the afternoon join an optional, tropical mangrove cruise along the Tarcoles River – this area is famous for having one of the world's largest wild crocodile populations. Make sure you pre-book this excursion, as places are limited.

Our destination today is Manuel Antonio National Park, on Costa Rica's Pacific coast.

This beautiful reserve is home to monkeys, toucans and a host of other wonderful wildlife. Your Local Guide will be on hand to tell you more about the park.

Today we return to San José for our return flight to the UK via Houston, arriving on day 17.

Excursions

Experience even more of your destination by adding one or more optional excursions to your holiday before you set off. Right now is the perfect opportunity to do that – with everything booked and paid for you’ll have even more to get excited about and all you’ll need to think about while you’re away is having a great time.

By the way - look out for ‘Optional Excursion Packages’. For some holidays we’ve grouped a selection of excursions into a package which means you can make a saving when you book in advance.

Prices shown may vary according to departure date and are subject to change.  The full range of excursions will be detailed in your holiday information pack, sent approximately 15 weeks prior to departure.

Cape Peninsula (full day)

Cape PointOur destination today is Manuel Antonio National Park, on Costa Rica's Pacific coast. Although Costa Rica's smallest National Park, Manuel Antonio has been listed as one of the world's most beautiful. The reserve is named after a Conquistador who is buried there and was established in 1972 and expanded in 1980. Characterised by expansive white sand beaches backed by dense forest that grows up to the tide, it is clear to see why Manuel Antonio National Park easily conjures paradisiacal thoughts and imagery.

When entering this beautiful reserve, one is treated to an abundance of wildlife. Over 350 species of birds call Manuel Antonio home - aim to look offshore to see brown pelicans fishing! Despite their bright colours, Fiery-billed aracaris (toucancillo piquianaranjado) and chestnut mandibled toucans (Dios-te-dé) blend with the forest remarkably well.

Iguanas and other reptiles can often be spotted close to the shore. However, be certain to keep your eyes peeled for a creature synonymous with the rainforest, the red-eyed leaf frog as they are more difficult to find!

The park covers an area of approximately 1,685 acres, that's roughly equal to double the size of Central Park in New York City! However, as you arrive into the park you will be amazed by the abundance of wildlife present!
