All walking tours

Our walks are some of the most spectacular in the world, the scenery is incredible and you’ll get a huge sense of achievement after completing each one. It’s important, though, to prepare fully for your walking holiday to ensure you are fit enough to really enjoy it – especially if you are not a regular walker. Some walks can be quite strenuous and can often take people by surprise. Your Holiday Director will give your further detail on the walks at the Welcome Meeting and we recommend talking to your Holiday Director if you’re concerned or would like additional information about the difficulty of any of the walks. Alternatives will be arranged where possible if you don’t feel you can manage the entire scheduled walk.

Preparing for your walking tour

We suggest you do the following in the weeks leading up to your walking holiday to give yourself the best chance of fully enjoying it:

  • Get out and about on walks as often as you can, try to include hills and steep gradients where possible, and increase the length each time.

  • Make sure your walking shoes/boots are fully broken in – don’t wear walking shoes on your walking holiday for the first time!

  • Get used to wearing your backpack.

  • Make sure your mobile phone works in the country you are travelling to and don’t forget to pack your charger.

  • Do some daily light stretching to start getting your muscles and joints prepared for the movement.

Top tips for keeping your feet in good condition

  • You don’t want to have to curtail your walking because of painful feet. Here are some top tips to keep your feet in good working order:

  • Wear comfortable, good-fitting, worn-in boots or shoes - essential on long walks

  • Wear good walking socks in the right size - wearing two pairs of socks can help prevent rubbing

  • Immediately remove anything from your socks or boots which causes irritation

  • Check your feet carefully and regularly, for any sign of rubbing and tenderness

  • Walk as much as possible in your boots so that your skin hardens

  • Act as soon as you feel any discomfort, as blisters can form very quickly. Stop, remove your shoes and socks, apply some foot cream and rest for a while

  • Remove your boots and socks when you stop for a rest to give your feet a chance to dry off and cool down

  • Carry some plasters (ideally blister plasters) or padded dressings in your rucksack

Keeping your energy levels up

It’s important to take plenty of food and water with you when out walking to stay hydrated and keep your energy levels up, especially on longer walks. It’s advisable to carry appropriate walking snacks, such as:

  • Energy bars

  • Flapjacks

  • Dried fruit & nuts

  • Jelly babies

  • Malt loaf

  • Crackers and cheese

Remember to take all your litter away with you – including fruit peel, skin and cores - to avoid spoiling the beauty of the countryside, and causing unnecessary harm to wildlife.

Hydration

Staying hydrated is one of the most important things to do when walking. It is especially important when you are on holiday and walking in temperatures higher than you’re used to and/or at different altitudes. Dehydration can lead to tiredness, cramps and headaches and could be dangerous, so take plenty of water with you, particularly if you’re going on a long walk or are walking in remote areas. It’s equally important to keep hydrated in the days before your walks.

A few helpful tips

The Department of Health recommends that we should drink about 1.2 litres of fluid a day. On holiday you’re likely to need more, particularly in warmer weather.

Take regular sips of water as you go, rather than large gulps when you stop for a rest.

Still water is your best option when on holiday, over and above any other types of drinks. Fizzy drinks are not good for quenching thirst as they are difficult to consume quickly. Fruit juice, sports drinks and non-diet soft drinks contain sugar which will boost your energy but aren’t as effective as water at keeping you hydrated.

We would also suggest that you take with you a plug-in mosquito repellent device for your hotel room as an extra measure. • Dress codeIn general, local people dress very conservatively, especially in areas away from the main towns and cities. When visiting temples and religious sites, you should cover your shoulders and knees out of respect. We would also suggest that you take with you a plug-in mosquito repellent device for your hotel room as an extra measure. This measure has been introduced to help reduce noise pollution and minimise disturbance to wildlife, supporting conservation efforts within the park. Please note that the safari driver and naturalist will be permitted to carry a mobile phone strictly for emergency use only.

  • Photo and video cameras remain permitted during safaris, allowing guests to continue capturing their experience. We advise to leave your mobile phone in your hotel room; alternatively mobile phones will be collected by the guide before the safari begins and kept in designated boxes in a safe space. Your Holiday Director will explain all of this in detail during your welcome briefing. We kindly ask all visitors to comply with these regulations, which have been implemented by the local authorities and apply to all safari guests.

Japan Revealed
  • Plug type: A and B (100 volts)

  • Can I take my medications to Japan? The use or possession of some common prescription and over-the-counter medicines is banned under Japan’s strictly enforced anti-stimulant drugs law. This includes Vicks inhalers, medicines for allergies and sinus problems, cold and flu medication containing Pseudoephedrine and some over-the-counter painkillers such as those containing codeine. Foreign nationals have been detained and deported for offences relating to such medicines, and ignorance may not be considered a defence.

  • Please make sure you check the status of your medication with the nearest Japanese Embassy or Consulate before you travel. If you’re travelling with prescription medication that is permitted under Japanese law, you’re usually allowed to take up to one month’s supply. You’re advised to take a copy of your prescription and a letter from your doctor stating what condition the medication has been prescribed to treat.

  • For more guidance on travelling with medication, please see the information pages on the NHS Choices and the National Travel Health Network and Centre (NaTHNaC) websites.

  • Toilets in Japan: Toilets in Japan are some of the best and most hi-tech in the world. The bidet, a toilet and post-restroom cleaner - or 'freshener' - combined, is common in Japan, but you may also encounter a squat toilet. Both of these are extremely hygienic though the latter may take some getting used to and you may wish to keep some tissues and hand sanitiser in your day bag for any such situations.

  • Overnight bag: There will be occasions on this tour where for one night or more you will be away from your main luggage and so a lightweight overnight bag will be essential for this trip.

We advise, subject to consultation with your doctor, that you purchase high-performance mosquito repellent and apply this regularly during your holiday, including at bedtime. We would also suggest that you take with you a plug-in mosquito repellent device for your hotel room as an extra measure. These, along with DEET-based repellents, are available from most pharmacies. It's a good idea to keep your arms and legs covered and you can also spray clothing with DEET-based products but they are less effective on clothing than on skin. Advice on preventing and treating mosquito bites is available from: http://travelhealthpro.org.uk/insect-tick-bite-avoidance/ The full travel advice can be accessed here https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/

  • Extra layers for warmth: In Wadi Rum, you will stay in authentic Bedouin-style accommodation, usually a tented structure with ensuite facilities. Located in the middle of the desert, this traditional accommodation is designed to replicate the Bedouin way of life and is empathetic to the surroundings. It is officially unrated and facilities may not be at the same level as those in hotels. In the desert, the temperature drops significantly when the sun goes down, so it is advisable to take extra layers for warmth, especially during the winter months where you need to take the appropriate clothing for cold nights.

  • Entertainment for coach: Namibia is a beautiful country characterised by vast, often rugged landscapes and the opportunity to witness incredible attractions, wildlife and scenery. On this tour prepare for long stretches of driving with limited services such as petrol stations, shops and phone signal along the way. Having a supply of water, snacks, a book and games with you will all help pass the time between stops as 4-5 hours of driving per day is common, with some stretches potentially taking longer due to Namibia's extensive network of gravel roads, which make up a significant portion of the country's road infrastructure. Most gravel roads are well-maintained and smooth, some can be rough and bumpy. Your driver is fully experienced in driving this terrain and the vehicle you travel in is built for and equipped with your safety and comfort in mind.
