Your itinerary

Fly to Calgary today. On arrival we'll transfer to Banff via a spectacular journey through the Rocky Mountains.

Banff National Park is an incredible wilderness nestled in the heart of the Rockies. Our morning tour will take in the Hoodoos of Bow Valley, imposing spires of rock carved by wind and water, and Surprise Corner, so named because as we drive out of Banff, the view suddenly opens into a fantastic mountain vista, featuring the famous Banff Springs Hotel. Later, we'll take the Banff Gondola to the top of Sulphur Mountain for sensational views. Get to know your travelling companions over drinks and an included dinner this evening.

Enjoy a scenic winter wonderland as you sit back and relax on an included horse-drawn sleigh ride today.

Later, spend free time exploring Banff or maybe you'll choose to warm up during our included visit to Banff's natural hot springs.

We travel to the former railroad town of Jasper and its breathtakingly beautiful national park. Spend the evening enjoying your hotel's facilities or perhaps head into Jasper with your travelling companions.
In 2011, Jasper was designated a dark sky preserve, an area where almost no artificial light is visible at night. This evening, you could choose to join our optional excursion, the Jasper Dark Sky Planetarium and Telescope Experience. You'll take a virtual tour of the night sky in a 50-seat domed theatre and then step outside to see the largest telescope in the Rockies. Experts will offer you tips on astrophotography and, if conditions are favourable, you will have a chance to view the night sky for yourself through a telescope.

Today we venture into Jasper National Park for sightseeing in an area of pristine wilderness. You may also choose to join a wonderful winter adventure – a Maligne Canyon icewalk. In the company of a guide you'll head to the bottom of the deep canyon where we'll see frozen waterfalls, ice caves and incredible ice formations.

Lake Louise is thought by many to be one of the most beautiful places in Canada, and we head here today for a two-night stay.

Today we have free time to enjoy the excellent facilities at the chateau and its glorious surroundings. Alternatively, why not join our amazing optional excursion – snowshoeing on Lake Louise. This evening we'll gather as a group and head outside, where a blazing firepit will keep us warm as we enjoy a farewell drink.

Before we transfer to the airport we have a city tour of Calgary, inlcuding a stop by Canada Olympic Park, one of the venues in the 1988 Winter Olympics, the featured events including the ski jump and bobsleigh. Later in the day we will transfer to the airport for our flight back to the UK.

We will arrive in the UK today.

Experience even more of your destination by adding one or more optional excursions to your holiday before you set off. Right now is the perfect opportunity to do that – with everything booked and paid for you’ll have even more to get excited about and all you’ll need to think about while you’re away is having a great time.

By the way - look out for ‘Optional Excursion Packages’. For some holidays we’ve grouped a selection of excursions into a package which means you can make a saving when you book in advance.

Prices shown may vary according to departure date and are subject to change.  The full range of excursions will be detailed in your holiday information pack, sent approximately 15 weeks prior to departure.

Tour Blog by Tour Manager Patrick Twomey

Embark on a thrilling winter adventure as you'll head off on an icewalk in the Maligne Canyon, read Tour Manager Patrick's blog on this amazing experience

Maligne CanyonEveryone who has travelled with me is acutely aware of my lifelong love affair with Jasper National Park. For any connoisseur of the Rockies, Jasper is real, wild, beautiful and deeply authentic. In the winter, Jasper is all that, yet even more magic.

An obvious stop for any visitor to the Jasper area is the Maligne Valley and during the winter months, it is possible for people of almost every ability to take a guided walk into this remarkable landscape. Over the last two winters, I have trusted the guides at Maligne Adventures to lead over 300 of my friends and clients from Just You and Travelsphere into the canyon.

On all the winter trips, climatic conditions govern most activities and walking on ice is clearly weather-related, but in general terms, all our visitors go home knowing they have done far more than they expected and specifically, the ice-walk consistently stands out as a highlight. This is easy to understand. Not many people grow up with as much snow and ice as us Canadian mountain people, and few have ever thought about ‘ice-climbing!’

After a journey into the canyon, they have still not ice-climbed, but they have witnessed it firsthand! More significantly, people from less icy climes – from age 25 to 85 – will have walked on ice, deep into geologic history. This 3-hour excursion may not be for everyone. but it is close. The company provides appropriate (waterproof) footwear and ice cleats. The informed – and addictively enthusiastic – guides watch virtually every step.

Learning about the Maligne River is interesting. The ‘disappearing’ Medicine Lake is fascinating, but honestly, the frozen waterfalls and deep, limestone canyon is so beautiful as to be breathtaking. Not a word I often use. In functional terms, I promise to show Maligne Canyon to all visitors who join me in Jasper, but from December through March a guided walk into the icy canyon is a trip of a lifetime.

I do strongly recommend using a guide. The canyon is wonderfully accessible, yet almost alien to those either not equipped or not familiar with such an environment. Ice is dangerous anywhere, but with good guidance, Maligne Canyon may just be the best winter outing anywhere in the Rocky Mountains. This is my last trip of 7 here this winter. It has been a beautiful winter season, so I asked Randal to take me for a walk. The ice was particularly perfect this year. Even though I have stared into Maligne Canyon for over 20 years, it is easy to forget just how incredible a place it is.
