Your itinerary

Today we'll fly to Zurich and transfer by rail to the pretty, traffic-free village of Wengen. After settling in we'll head out for a walk around the village and afterwards you'll have time at leisure. This evening we'll get to know one another better over a welcome drink and dinner at the hotel.

Walk 12km/7.45mi – 3.5hrs
After breakfast we'll take a short train ride to Lauterbrunnen. From here the first of our guided walks takes us along the White Lütschine and the Lütschine Rivers to the village of Wilderswil. Here we'll board a nostalgic cogwheel train and wind our way up the mountain to Schynige Platte where we'll be greeted by alphorn players. Enjoy your packed lunch in the company of your travelling companions and perhaps take a stroll around the Botanical Alpine Garden, which is home to more than 600 species of plants.
After returning to Wilderswil we'll travel to Interlaken and then back to Wengen by train. Dinner will be served at the hotel this evening.

Walk 10.1km/6.3mi – 3 hrs
We'll take the train to Lauterbrunnen again this morning and walk along the valley to the Trümmelbach Falls. We'll have time to discover this magnificent site, a series of 10 glacier-fed waterfalls hidden away inside a mountain, before continuing on foot to Stechelberg. From here we'll take a cable car to Gimmelwald and then continue our walk to Muerren, admiring impressive views of the north face of the Eiger along the way. We'll travel to the summit of Allmendhubel by funicular and if you've already eaten your packed lunch, a lovely restaurant here serves local specialities, drinks and delicious cakes.
We will follow the trail back down to Muerren and descend to Lauterbrunnen by train and cable car, returning to Wengen by train. Dinner is at the hotel this evening.

We have left today free for you to explore. Why not head out with your travelling companions and make use of your Bernese Oberland Pass so you can explore the region at your leisure. We'll gather as a group again this evening to enjoy dinner at the hotel.

Walk 12 km/7.5miles – 4.5 hours
After breakfast we'll take a cable car to Männlichen, the start-point for today's walk. We walk along the eastern flank of Tschuggen Alp to Honegg. After an easy hike we'll reach Kleine Scheidegg where you can relax and enjoy your packed lunch. After this, we pass through alpine pastures on our walk down to Alpiglen, following the trail to Grindelwald. From here, we will ascend to First by cable car and enjoy panoramic views from the summit, before returning to Wengen by train.
We'll enjoy our final evening at the hotel, where dinner will be served.

We'll transfer to the airport by train for our flight back to the UK.

Tour Blog by Yvonne

Just You destination expert, Yvonne, recently visited the places that feature on our new Walking in the Swiss Alps tour and wrote a blog about it. Read below to find out more about what you can expect to experience on this fantastic holiday.

Walking in the Swiss Alps

Clear mountain air, blue skies and epic views are what I always associate with the Swiss Alps, and you get it all by the bucket load on Just You’s newest addition to its Active holiday range.

Cogwheel Railway Wilderswill

Walking in the Swiss Alps is a six-day experience that does exactly what it says, a memorable exploration by foot where the uphill walks are made just that bit easier with cable cars and trains taking the strain.

There is plenty of time to breathe in that fresh air. In total we cover almost 23 miles on foot, though with our expert mountain guide pointing out all of the sights, flora and fauna, the miles seem to float by.

The best part of a walking holiday is that you have plenty of time to get to know your fellow Just You travellers while you accompany each other along the mountain paths.

Pull on your walking boots

Mountain Restaurant

Our home from home is the Sunstar Alpine Hotel in the traffic-free resort of Wengen, where our first day is spent exploring the village which gives everyone a chance to get used to the altitude. Couple of points to note about the hotel, it has a fantastic wellness centre complete with indoor swimming pool, and don’t forget the mini-bar is complimentary and restocked every day.

We pull on our walking boots after breakfast and head off on a short train ride to Lauterbrunnen, where we walk along the White Lütschine and the Lütschine Rivers to Wilderswil. Here we board the cogwheel railway to Schynige Platte, home to an Alpine garden with over 600 plant types.

As you get off the train there will be a couple of Alphorn players waiting to entertain you, it is definitely worth seeing if they will let you have a go... how many times will you have the chance to play an Alphorn at the top of the Alps?

After lunch it’s off to Wilderswil to continue our walk along the Lütschine River to Bönigen, a rural village where the mountains are reflected in the deep waters of Lake Brienz. After exploring the village it is back to Wengen by boat and train. This is a holiday that uses a wide range of transport.

Dinner is followed by a much needed sleep and then we are off again the next morning on a train ride to Lauterbrunnen and a walk to the Trümmelbach Falls. This is a truly awesome spectacle with ten waterfalls inside a mountain, and the noise of the water hitting the rock has to be heard to be believed.

The North Face of the Eiger awaits us as we take the cable car up to Gimmelwald and continue our journey on foot towards Muerren, catching the funicular railway to the summit of Allmendhubel. When you get to the top, my advice is to head to the café for a slice of cake with a view.

Mountain restaurant

The fourth day of the trip is a ‘free’ day with no organised walking, meaning you are free to make plans with your travelling companions and head out to explore the area surrounding Wengen. Everyone is given a Bernese Oberland Pass which allows you access to the rail and boat network in the region.

The Sound of Music

Our final full day is packed full of incredible views, which begins with a cable car ride up the 2,230 metre mountain of Männlichen. Following our guide, we head off towards the south to the Tschuggen Alp to Honegg and on to our lunch stop at Kleine Scheidegg.

Our journey back to the hotel is reminiscent of the opening scene of the Sound of Music as we head through the alpine pastures on the walk down to Alpiglen, following the trail to Grindelwald. The ascent by cable car to the summit of First, with its elevation of over 2,600 metres, is a great last view of the Alps before heading back to the hotel for the farewell dinner.
