Itinerary

Today we’ll fly to Chicago and transfer to our hotel.
360 Chicago (formerly the John Hancock Observatory) offers some of the finest views of the city and we’ll enjoy breakfast here this morning - a great start to the holiday.

Chicago is a city with an intense history and we’ll find out more on a half-day tour. One of its must-see sights is Anish Kapoor’s mirrored sculpture known as ‘the bean’, which sits at the edge of the beautiful Millennium Park.

This evening we’ll enjoy a welcome drink and dinner at an authentic Chicago pizza restaurant followed
by a visit to the famous Buddy Guys Blues Legends Club to hear Chicago’s
great sounds.
Today’s adventure begins at the official start of Route 66 in the heart of Chicago. Much of the original route has been modernised but we’ll follow the old roads where we can. As we eat up the miles on our way to LA, we’ll meet local characters, stop off at neon-lit diners, sleepy towns and cowboy ranches. Our stop today is the state capital of Illinois, Springfield, where Abraham Lincoln lived with his family. We will visit the area of Lincoln’s former home and tomb.
St Louis is home to America’s busiest inland port thanks to the Mississippi River flowing through its heart. The 630ft steel Gateway Arch that towers over the landscape was built to commemorate the expansion into the west. We’ll view the Arch and take a tour of downtown St Louis. This afternoon we visit the peaceful town of St Charles, where you can browse in the boutiques and relax in one of the many charming eateries.
Another Springfield is our destination today – this time it’s the location of the infamous shootout between Wild Bill Hickok and David Tutt, an event that allegedly gave rise to the Wild West era. We take a brief tour of the city on arrival.
Day 6 sees us travel along the most historical section of Route 66, through ‘cowboy country’ and across the corner of Kansas. We stop at the cultural capital, Tulsa, en route to Oklahoma City. On day 7 we visit the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum, which honours some of the most famous cowboys in history. We also take a tour of the impressive Oklahoma State Capitol building before having some free time to explore Oklahoma City.
The huge state of Texas beckons today. Our journey takes us to Palo Duro Canyon State Park before we continue through the top part of Texas and on to Amarillo.
We spend day 9 on the road as we cross the border to New Mexico and continue to the historic city of Albuquerque. On day 10 you have the option to explore independently or join us on an optional excursion to Santa Fe, an affluent town with a heavy Spanish influence.
Back on the road and we’re heading to Gallup and then into Arizona, visiting the intriguing Petrified Forest National Park en route. As we head further into the wilderness we will come across the mysterious Meteor Crater, created some 50,000 years ago by an asteroid.
A slight detour from the Route takes us to the Grand Canyon. The Colorado River took seven million years to cut the 140-mile wide gorge and create this gigantic canyon. After time to explore, we continue to the man-made wonder of Las Vegas.
Las Vegas is an oasis of sparkling nightlife, glittering sidewalks and fantastical scenery.

Today is free for you to explore at leisure. As you’re so close to the Grand Canyon you might want to take the option of a flight over and into its depths. This evening we include a tour of Las Vegas.
We’re back on the road today, with
Los Angeles our destination. On arrival, there will be time for lunch followed by a sightseeing tour of the city.
This evening there will be time to
relax over a farewell drink with your
fellow travellers.
We transfer to the airport today for our return flight. You will arrive back in the UK on day 16.

Please note: To maximise your enjoyment of this holiday a certain amount of walking is essential.

Excursions

Experience even more of your destination by adding one or more optional excursions to your holiday before you set off. Right now is the perfect opportunity to do that – with everything booked and paid for you’ll have even more to get excited about and all you’ll need to think about while you’re away is having a great time.

By the way - look out for ‘Optional Excursion Packages’. For some holidays we’ve grouped a selection of excursions into a package which means you can make a saving when you book in advance.

Prices shown may vary according to departure date and are subject to change.  The full range of excursions will be detailed in your holiday information pack, sent approximately 15 weeks prior to departure.

Grand Canyon… Hoover Dam… Lake Mead… if you can spare about 3 hours of your Vegas time, you’ve got time to see all that and more! This is the best value Las Vegas Grand Canyon air tour around. Start with shuttle service from your Las Vegas hotel and transport to the Boulder City Municipal Airport. After boarding your deHavilland Twin Otter airplane, you’re up and away over spectacular sights like the Mojave Desert, the O’Callaghan-Tillman Hoover Dam Bypass Bridge, sitting so high up that it almost seems unreal. Below the bypass bridge, the Hoover Dam still stands as a monumental achievement in engineering even by 21st century standards. Behind Hoover Dam, the deep blue waters of Lake Mead stretch placidly eastward. Up ahead is the West Rim of the Grand Canyon, formally known as Grand Canyon West. This area of the Grand Canyon has been occupied by the Hualapai Indian Tribe for over 1,000 years. Here you’ll see a side of the Grand Canyon where fewer limits exist and the views are vertical and accessible. After about 70 minutes in the air, it’s time to return to Boulder City, where your shuttle waits to take you back to your hotel. Look how much you saw, how quickly you saw it, and what a great deal it was!
