Fly to Oporto, Portugal's second city where your river cruiser awaits. This evening you'll get to know your fellow travellers over a drink and dinner. You might also take the opportunity to join an optional tour to see the fascinating city of Oporto by night.
After breakfast, relax and enjoy views of stunning wooded landscapes as you cruise through the spectacular Douro valley to the town of Regua. This afternoon you may choose to join our optional excursion to the medieval town of Lamego, for a chance to admire the spectacular Nossa Senhora de Remedios sanctuary and impressive Gothic cathedral. This evening, dinner is followed by dancing and folk music.
Today you could choose to join our optional excursion to Vila Real. Here, you can take in the beautiful gardens of Solar de Mateus, the 18th century country house featured on bottles of Mateus rosé wine. Rejoining the ship in Pinhão, this afternoon we sail through the heart of the famous Porto vineyards, planted in steep terraces on the hills of the river valley, before arriving at Porto Antigo.
This morning you will enjoy a leisurely cruise back to Oporto. This is the second-largest city in Portugal and its historic centre is registered as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Today, the city is mostly known as the home of port wine and after lunch, an optional guided tour of the city will take you to one of its most famous cellars for an opportunity to enjoy a tasting.
Today you are free to explore Oporto at leisure, before returning to the ship for lunch. This afternoon, our optional excursion takes you to the historic town of Guimaraes, birthplace of the first independent king of Portugal, Afonso Henriques. Admire the beautifully preserved medieval centre of Guimaraes with its narrow streets and pretty plazas, before continuing on to Braga. This elegant city is considered to be the oldest Christian archdiocese in Portugal and one of the oldest in the world.
This evening you'll enjoy a lovely farewell dinner and traditional show with your travelling companions as your cruise comes to an end.
Enjoy an included sightseeing tour of Oporto and time to explore at leisure, before your return flight to the UK early this evening.

Oporto by Night
This is a unique opportunity to admire the city of Porto by night during a panoramic coach tour. You will love the old, conserved districts in this city of immense character, classed as a world heritage site by UNESCO. During the tour of the historic centre, your guide will schedule a stop at the Sao Bento railway station to look at its magnificent azulejos.
Evening tour – Minimal Walking – Historical
During a guided tour of the city you will discover the Stock Exchange Building and the Sao Francisco Church. You will also see the famous Dom Luis Bridge, built between 1881 and 1886 by Theophile Seyrig, Gustave Eiffel’s disciple. We also include a visit to a wine cellar with a Port wine tasting in Vila Nova de Gaia, a town situated on the south bank of the Douro.
Half day – Moderate Walking – Cultural
Please note to visit the São Francisco Church you will need to climb 50 steps.
You will set out for Vila Real by coach, a pleasant little town situated amongst the foothills of the majestic slopes of Serra do Marão. Enjoy a tour of the town before continuing towards Mateus, where you will visit the Palácio de Mateus. This splendid manor house is depicted on the labels of the famous Mateus rosé wine. Built in the 18th century, the building has an impressive baroque façade and ornate pinnacles on the roof. The beautifully landscaped gardens feature elegant statues as well as a stunning reflecting pond in the front of the palace.
Half day - Moderate Walking – Scenic
Depart from Regua by coach for a guided tour of Lamego. During this excursion, you will discover the Nossa Senhora dos Remédios sanctuary and Lamego Cathedral. The sanctuary of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios is one of Portugal’s most famous places of pilgrimage. The awe-inspiring 686 step double stairway, which many pilgrims climb on their knees in September each year, has 9 terraces leading to the twin-towered church. The commanding views alone make the climb worthwhile. Your excursion then continues onto Lamego Cathedral, Founded in 1129 by Afonso Henriques, the imposing Gothic Lamego Cathedral has been considerably altered over the years, particularly in the 16th to 18th centuries. Only the square tower remains of the original.
Half day – Minimal Walking - Not to be missed
Please note that the coach drives up to the sanctuary of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios and you do not have to walk up/down the stairway unless you would like to.
This afternoon we will journey by coach from Porto to charming city of Guimarães whose historic town centre has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001. Guimarães is regarded as the birth place of Portugal and its extensive history is reflected in the variety of national monuments and historic buildings found within the city. With our guide, we'll begin the tour of this university town on foot to discover its historical treasures.
