Itinerary

We’ll fly to Beijing today, arriving on day 2.
Beijing is an exceptional city, a huge sprawling metropolis bursting with ancient history and contemporary culture. The Summer Palace, a former royal garden, is set in beautiful grounds and it is here that your experience of China begins with a tour and lunch.

At the heart of Beijing is Tiananmen Square, a site of huge cultural and political significance, bordered by the Qianmen Gate, the Great Hall of the People and the Gate of Heavenly Peace. We’ll discover more about it during our tour on day 3. We will also visit the Forbidden City, where you will have time to marvel at the Imperial Palace before we continue to the Temple of Heaven.
Yonghe Lamasery is a renowned Lama temple, housing a treasury of Buddhist art, including sculptured images of gods, demons and Buddha as well as Tibetan-style murals. We will visit the temple this morning. At Mutianyu we have the opportunity to visit the Great Wall. One of the best ways to appreciate its might is from above and we’ll take a cable car to the top for wonderful views of this remarkable structure and the surrounding landscape. As a fitting finale to this great day, we will enjoy a traditional Chinese dinner this evening.
We’ll fly to Xian and visit the Han Tombs, the resting place of hundreds of terracotta figurines and animals buried with the fourth emperor of the Han Dynasty. Our journey continues as we head towards the beautifully preserved city wall, before transferring to our hotel.

Xian, often referred to as the ‘city of eternal peace’, was once the flourishing capital of China. It is here that the first Qin emperor was interred in 200BC with at least 6,000 life-size terracotta figures. We will see this remarkable sight on the morning of day 6. In the afternoon we head to the magnificent Small Wild Goose Pagoda, which was established in 684 AD.

After time to explore we continue to our next destination for a completely different experience. Dumplings are a staple food in Chinese cuisine and this afternoon you will have the chance to make some with the guidance of an expert. Keeping to the theme we will gather this evening for a traditional dumpling dinner. Later, join us on our optional excursion to the Tang Dynasty folklore show.
We’ll fly to Chengdu today. Jinli Street is one of the city’s main streets – here you can see and sample local delicacies and visit traditional tea houses and silk workshops. We’ll visit the street and enjoy a refreshing cup of jasmine tea, at a traditional tea house, on day 7.

Leshan is a must-see location thanks to its wonderful verdant scenery and the famous Leshan Giant Buddha that casts his gaze over the Minjiang and Qingjiang rivers. The Buddha here is the tallest in the world and was carved out of the cliff by a monk of the Tang Dynasty around 713 AD. We’ll see it on day 8 during a tour that also includes a boat ride offering an alternative view of the statue. We will also see the structure from the top of the mountain and visit the nearby Lingyun temple.
Chengdu Panda Breeding Research Centre is a highly regarded facility that helps to protect the rare giant panda and we will visit it this morning.

In the afternoon we fly to Shanghai. Why not join us on an optional tour to discover this magnificent city by night. As the natural light fades the landmarks are illuminated against the night sky.
Shanghai is the fastest-developing city in China, with a rich history embedded in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to uncover, and we’ll discover more on today’s included tour. At its heart is the Huangpu River, with its constant and extraordinary stream of water traffic. The Bund, the city’s famous riverside boulevard, is lined with magnificent former colonial buildings, which now stand as monuments to Shanghai’s one‑time notoriety.

The labyrinth of streets in the Old Town form a stark contrast with modern Nanjing Road - Shanghai is a shopping Mecca. By night, the city is a culinary delight, with all sorts of local and international foods and entertainment that just goes on and on. Our tour takes in the Nanjing Road, the traditional Old Town, with its ancient Wu Xing Ting Teahouse, and the classic Yu Yuan Gardens. We will also visit the beautiful Jade Buddha Temple. For an alternative perspective of the exceptional Chinese culture, we include a ticket to a Shanghai Acrobats show.
A wonderful way to appreciate Shanghai is from the river. This afternoon we include a cruise through Shanghai along the Huangpu River. As we sail towards the East Sea we will enjoy a great view of the Bund and the tremendous skyline. Nanjing Road is awash with sparkling shopping malls and boutiques selling all manner of exciting goods. In the mid-afternoon we will head here and enjoy some time at leisure.

Tonight we will gather as a group for dinner. We will overnight in Shanghai and transfer to the airport on the morning of day 12, arriving back in the UK later the same day.

Please note: We want you to get the most from your holiday with us please be advised this tour requires a good degree of physical fitness and is not suitable for anyone with limited mobility.

There are so many aspects of China to experience and to ensure you see the best of the country this tour will be very full with long, yet rewarding, days.

Beijing

Have arrived safely and just visited the Summer Palace. Weather predictions are clear skies and very low pollution levels. The Chinese are taking pictures of the lovely clear blue skies which is strange, but so pleased the weather is perfect! I’m looking forward to tomorrow.

Busy day today. Up at 6.30am and left the hotel at 8.00am for Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City. Amazing buildings and open areas. After enjoying a traditional Chinese lunch its on to the Temple of Heaven.

I really appreciate Just You's organisation. Great, well planned days and plenty of cold drinks on board, needed with the typical Chinese traffic jams (all part of the fun)! Weather most unusual for Beijing with sunny skies instead of dense smog! Enjoying the mix of people on our tour and everyone is getting on well.

It’s now 7.30pm, silk shop this evening and a Chinese dinner.

A visit to the nightmarket in Beijing... not for the faint-hearted! Went to the nightmarket which had an array of strange tasty treats! I had the snake and squid but decided against hairy spider, scorpion and an assortment of bugs!

Well after all that excitement it’s early to bed. Early start tomorrow to the Great Wall to avoid the busy traffic and it’s a public holiday. Both Alan (the local rep) and Susan, the Tour Manager are very good and are making the tour.

The Great Wall of China

I finally made it after a long climb and cable car ride. This is an amazing experience!

Susan Hussein, our Tour Manager and Alan, our local guide, I’m so impressed with both of them. The knowledge and organisational skills are truly making this a once in a lifetime experience.

Said goodbye to Alan this morning after a fantastic day at The Great Wall and later a Peking Duck dinner. This guy was just great!

Xian

Highlight of the day was a unique tea ceremony in Xian, where we received the keys to the City. Everyone in the group thought this was very special and we are the only group that this honour is given to.

Once the dumplings have been made, everyone sits down for a traditional dumpling dinner.

Terracotta Army

No one can prepare you for this unforgettable experience. As you walk towards what looks like a giant garden shed, you wonder where you are actually going!

Once inside the vast area that houses the army, its subtly lit and very cold, adding to the mystical atmosphere. You get a complete sense of history and the past. The thought that every solider is unique is a wonder in itself. I am so glad I came, a once in a lifetime experience!

Chengdu Panda Breeding Research Centre

This morning we left to see the pandas. I have really been looking forward to this and it did not disappoint. It’s great to see they are kept as close as possible to their natural habitat and look happy as they chomp on their bamboo shoots.

Now on to the airport for our flight to Shanghai. At the airport I met a 7 year old Chinese boy with his mum travelling to Shanghai. He could speak very good English so I taught him how to play games on my computer to keep him occupied. He then asked me to hold his hand going to the plane as he was nervous and he told his mum he wanted me as his grandad! It was lovely to meet them.

Once we arrived in Shanghai, we took the exciting high speed to train to the city centre travelling at around 400km per hour. So smooth and you would not even notice you are moving.

Shanghai

After relaxing at the hotel we now embark on the tour of this city of contrasts. From old to new and exciting, it’s a very surreal experience jumping back and forth in time.

The last few days in Shanghai have been great to visit and explore and get to know the city.

I don’t want to leave as even though I have seen so much, there is plenty more to see. Goodbye China, however I will be back!

This was my first time doing a holiday with people I did not know before... and it turned out to be one of the most amazing holidays I have ever been on. 1) Because the Tour Guide kept everything smooth running 2) Because China is so amazing. The holiday was so well thought out. It felt like everything had been accounted for. I felt safe, happy and am so glad I did it. Thank you all so much.

Just You Cares: Adopt a Panda Project

Just You Cares Bobo the pandaThe panda is a bear native to south central China. Pandas live in a few mountain ranges in central China, mainly in Sichuan province, but also in neighbouring provinces, namely Shaaxi and Gansu. As a result of farming, deforestation and other development, the giant panda has been driven out of the lowland areas where it once lived.

Although reports show an increase in its population, the panda is still classified as a vulnerable animal. In China we are supporting the Chengdu Panda Breeding Research Centre, which provides the best possible environment for these animals to live and breed. An inclusive visit to the research centre will provide an opportunity to see these rare and adorable creatures, including our very own adopted panda, Bobo, who was born in 2006.
