Your itinerary

Meet your travelling companions at the airport today for your scheduled flight to Reykjavik. On arrival, you'll transfer to your hotel where you stay for four nights. This evening, after you've settled into you room, get to know your fellow travellers as you join them for a welcome drink before dinner in the hotel's restaurant. Reykjavik is Iceland's vibrant capital and it boasts some intriguing buildings, a lively culture and plenty of cosy cafés, galleries and museums. What's more, Iceland provides some of the best Northern Lights viewing conditions in the world, so if you're lucky you may see this natural phenomenon at some point during your holiday. It is also a destination that boasts an abundance of spectacular wildlife – there's a chance you might spot a whale from the shore, or see seabirds such as puffins, which nest along the coastline.

Reykjavik's many gems await our discovery today during a morning tour. We'll be joined by a Local Guide, who will show us the main sights including the fishing harbour, Parliament buildings and The Pearl – one of the city's most recognisable landmarks consisting of five huge hot water storage tanks topped with a domed revolving restaurant. We'll get to relax or explore at our own pace this afternoon. Perhaps go out for a stroll and see more of Reykjavik. The city also houses an exhibition centre, where you can see the remains of a Viking longhouse that was discovered during its construction, as well as other exhibits including human remains dating back to approximately 870AD. We also have the chance to join a whale-watching cruise later this afternoon in the company of an expert guide. This unmissable Icelandic adventure gives us the opportunity to see these incredible creatures in their natural environment, although sightings can never be guaranteed. This evening we'll gather as a group to enjoy a four-course meal at a local restaurant.

The Blue Lagoon is a stunning natural geothermal pool located in the middle of a lava field. This soothing body of water is rich in minerals and reputed to have curative powers – so on this morning's included visit, dive in and judge for yourself! While you are here be sure to head to the Silica bar, where you can apply silica mud to your face and body, which will leave your skin feeling soft and smooth. You can also linger beneath the lagoon's man-made waterfall, which is said to ease tension in stiff muscles. Other amenities include a sauna and steam baths, which are carved into the lava rock, and a relaxation area, where you can take breaks from the water as you laze in comfortable chairs, listen to music and take in the amazing views out over the lagoon. We'll carry on the relaxed theme with an afternoon at leisure. Perhaps take some time to enjoy the facilities at your hotel, or join up with your travelling companions to explore a little further. There's also a free evening for you to try another of the city's restaurants come dinner time.

The Golden Circle is a popular route, looping round from Reykjavik into central Iceland and back again. Why not join our optional excursion to the Golden Circle today. We'll see the mighty waterfall at Gullfoss, one of the fascinating stops on this route, along with the Strokhur Geyser, one of Iceland's most famous geysers. It erupts every few minutes, with the water reaching heights of up to 40 metres - it really is a spectacluar sight! Alternatively, you could choose to take the day at your own pace and spend some time at leisure. The aurora borealis, also known as the Northern Lights, are a dazzling natural phenomenon. These colourful dancing lights appear when charged particles from the sun's solar wind interact with the Earth's magnetic field, and we have the opportunity to go off in search for them on an optional excursion today. We'll gather as a group this evening at the renowned Skólabrú Restaurant for dinner, a great way to round off an unforgettable holiday.

We'll transfer to the airport today for the flight back to the UK.

Excursions

Experience even more of your destination by adding one or more optional excursions to your holiday before you set off. Right now is the perfect opportunity to do that – with everything booked and paid for you’ll have even more to get excited about and all you’ll need to think about while you’re away is having a great time.

By the way - look out for ‘Optional Excursion Packages’. For some holidays we’ve grouped a selection of excursions into a package which means you can make a saving when you book in advance.

Your whale watching adventure begins at Reykjavik´s Old Harbour, just minutes away from the city centre! The boats offer great comfort, a fantastic interior, large outside viewing decks and a safe family environment. The friendly guides, along with the captain and crew, point out where to spot the whales and give interesting information about the different kinds of whales and seabirds you can expect to see. We recommend warm clothes, such as hats, mittens and scarfs, as it does get cold out on sea.

The Golden Circle Tour is one of the most popular day excursion, it includes many of the scenic natural wonders. We start with the highland plateau of Hellisheiði, an area with large lava fields and steaming valleys and we pass the greenhouse town of Hveragerði. Onwards we reach the geothermal active valley of Haukadalur which contains the geysers Geysir and Strokkur. We explore this otherworldly hot spring area, a geothermal field covered with multicolored pools of water where hot springs are in abundance, geysers explode and pools of mud bubble. Strokkur, the Great Geysir's little brother, is spouting to a height of about 25 meters (82 ft) and erupts at about 5-7 minute intervals.
One of the Golden Circles many highlights is the Gullfoss waterfall, the queen of Iceland's waterfalls. The mighty Gullfoss (the Golden Waterfall) is perhaps the most beautiful in the country. We walk around Gullfoss Falls, where the river Hvitá tumbles.
Finally, but no less spectacular is a visit to the Þingvellir National Park (Thingvellir) and UNESCO World Heritage Site. We stroll around the country's most sacred site, home of the oldest existing parliament in the world, the Alþingi, and major events in our history. Thingvellir is a place of fascinating natural beauty, one of the most geologically spectacular, set on a vast plain flanked by large fissures, right on Iceland's largest lake, Thingvallavatn.

We drive in the twilight chasing the Aurora Borealis. This is a mystery-filled tour. The destination is not decided in advance, since we will try to find the best place away from the city lights. We travel into the wilderness outside Reykjavík to search for the northern lights. On a clear night and with a little luck we can see the lights swirl around in dramatic shapes across the night sky – truly an amazing sight.
***This excursion is not available to book in resort and can only be booked prior to travel***
*** This tour is subject to weather conditions, sightings of the Northern Lights can under no circumstances be guaranteed ***

We asked our Tour Manager to sum up what they really love about this tour. Here's what they said:

I love this tour because Iceland is so unique and unlike anywhere else. Where else do you land in a country and drive across lava fields to get to the hotel!
