Sacred Valley & Ollantaytambo

Your itinerary

Today you'll fly to Lima, the 'City of Kings'.

Founded in 1535 by the Spanish Conquistador, Francisco Pizarro, much of Spain's colonial influence can still be seen in Lima. Beautiful squares, fine churches and mansions have changed little since the 17th century. Must-see sights include the cathedral, the Archbishop's Palace and the Presidential Palace, which all feature on our included tour. The pre-Inca and Inca artefacts in the city's many museums are also fascinating and you'll have a chance to see them too. Get to know your travelling companions over a drink this evening.

It's important to allow your body time to acclimatise to the high altitude in Peru, so we've left today free for you to do just that.

The Valley of the Incas is awash with intriguing sites and fascinating tales. The colourful Chinchero´s Market is full of shops selling all manner of handicraft items - it's a lovely town with a real local feel and you may choose to spend some time here today.

The impressive Inca ruins of the Ollantaytambo fortress and temple offer an insight into the distinctive Inca building style and also deserve your attention. The site was being built at the time when the Spanish invaded, therefore much of the building was abandoned and remained unfinished.

The famous ruined city of Machu Picchu was rediscovered by American explorer Hiram Bingham, in 1911. Perched above a steep valley, swathed in dense jungle and often referred to as the 'Lost City', this is a truly incredible site. We travel to Machu Picchu by narrow gauge railway and take the bus up to mist-shrouded mountain tops and the captivating ruins. A Local Guide will accompany us and be on hand to answer questions. Wandering around the site and exploring the ruins for yourself is one of the greatest ways to experience Machu Picchu.

Cuzco, the former Inca capital, features a fascinating combination of Inca and colonial architecture in its mansions, churches and cobbled streets. Discover the city and the surrounding Inca sites, including the mighty ruins of the stone Sacsayhuaman Fortress, on a tour today.
Lovely Andean handicrafts and silver jewellery can be found at Cuzco's markets and boutiques. There is also a lively social scene – perhaps spend time with your fellow travellers in one of the inviting cafés or bars. Today you'll also visit a school in the Choco rural community which is supported by Just You Cares.

Today we're going to travel to Puno on the shores of Lake Titicaca. We'll travel through magnificent scenery and make several stops en route. First we'll visit Andahuayluillas, where a beautiful 17th century church contains an organ decorated with angels and cherubs. Next we'll call at the ruins of Racchi, and after an included lunch we'll see the archaeological site of Puca-Pucara, before arriving in Puno.

We've an early start today, as we make our way to the Uros Islands. Floating on Lake Titicaca, they have been constructed from the totora reed that grows around the edge of the lake. They are home to descendants of the region's native population, and we'll spend some time learning about their day-to-day life before setting sail for Amantani Island.
This permanent island is located 4,150 metres above sea level and its history can be traced back to pre-Incan times. For a truly unforgettable and authentic Peruvian experience, we're going to stay overnight in the homes of local families here. Your host family will welcome you on arrival and after showing you around their home, you'll sit down to lunch with them.
Later, we'll journey to one of island's highest points, an ancient ruin known as the Pachatata ceremonial center, where we'll watch the sun as it sets. We'll then head back to our hosts' homes, where dinner will be served accompanied by traditional music.

After enjoying breakfast with our host families, our explorations of Lake Titicaca's islands continues as we set sail for Taquile Island. Home to a tight-knit community, life here hasn't really changed for more than 1,000 years, and the Taquileños create everything they need themselves, including unique textiles and handicrafts. In fact, UNESCO has even inscribed its textile art on the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
We'll spend time with the locals, learning how both the men and women produce woven and knitted items. There's also time to take in exceptional scenery of terraced fields tumbling down to the bright blue waters of the lake and stone paths dating from pre-Hispanic times.
Later we'll return to Puno, where we'll head to a restaurant for dinner. We'll then transfer to the airport for our flight back to Lima.

During a free morning, why not head back into Lima to soak up more sights. Later we'll transfer you to the airport for your overnight flight back to the UK.

You'll arrive in the UK today.

Visit Chinchero, a small picturesque Andean village. Enter the home of a textile artisan, where you will see some of his original work and learn about his techniques, as well as his creative process. Then visit its significant Inca ruins dating from the end of the 15th Century, as well as a beautiful traditional church. Afterwards, on the road to Ollantaytambo, you will stop at the Racchi viewpoint, for one of the best views of the Sacred Valley. Lunch will be served at a local restaurant. Then it is on to Ollantaytambo, one of the most representative building complexes of the Inca Empire and site of one of the Spanish Conquistadors' rare strategic defeats. Famous for its terraced fields, Ollantaytambo was a very effective fortress and also a religious center. Finally, you will stop at the village of Ollantaytambo, known as "the only living Inca town". It is the best surviving example of Inca urban planning, with stone-paved streets that have been inhabited since the 12th Century.

Itinerary

DAY 10 Lima to Iquitos
Transfer to Lima airport for your flight to Iquitos where you will be greeted by your local expert. On arrival to Iquitos you will have an included lunch at the Victoria Regia Hotel before taking a boat along the mighty Amazon to your jungle lodge, where you will stay for the next two nights.

Heliconia Amazon River Lodge, named after the jungle's most stunning flower is located on the banks of the Amazon River 50 miles from Iquitos City.

The lodge accommodation is simple in its style allowing you to really enjoy the true natural highlights of the Amazon.  Rustic houses are built on stilts all connected by thatched roofed corridors with a refreshing swimming pool in its inner garden.  Electricity is limited and eco-friendly.  All rooms have private bathrooms with hot water showers.

This afternoon there will be a hike in the beautiful Yanamono primary rainforest reserve surrounding the lodge accompanied by an expert guide.  They will show you several flora species such as heliconia flowers, medicinal plants and giant trees.  You will also have the chance to sight several bird species such as the Turkey Vulture and with a little luck you will be able to view a family of small monkeys such as marmosets, the Titi and the squirrel monkey.

After dinner at the lodge your guide will take you on a boat ride along one of the Amazon River's tributaries for an exciting evening in the jungle, with no lights, perhaps just some jungle flora and fauna sparkling in the dark and where you can listen to the magical sounds of the jungle.

DAY 11 Iquitos
Rise early for the morning bird watching.  In order to see the birds flocked together during their morning feeding time, you will start very early going by boat to one of the several streams to look out for a number of variety of birds such as Tuki, Ringed Kingfisher and Black-Collared Hawk among others.  Return to the lodge for breakfast.

After a little rest you will set off on a native fishing expedition where you will learn the local techniques of fishing and for the most daring you can try to fish for Piranhas.  During this excursion you can also have the opportunity to look out for the Pink River Dolphin.

After lunch you will board the boat towards a lake in Yanamono island where you will be able to glimpse the Giant Water Lily, the Victoria Regia, the "Queen of water lilies".

This evening you have a chance to go on an enchanting evening trek within the grounds of the lodge.  As you adjust to the dark you will appreciate how the rainforest takes on a very different character.  Return to the lodge for dinner.

DAY 12 Iquitos to Lima
After breakfast we will visit a riverside town to see an indigenous tribe of the Yaguas community where you will have the opportunity to learn and see their way of life in the Amazon River.  See their homes, school, church, shops and interact with the people, learn their techniques of fishing and farming.

Return to the lodge for lunch and check-out.  After lunch, depending on your flight schedule, transfer to Iquitos City and the airport for your flight back to Lima for an overnight stay.

During the boat ride back to Iquitos enjoy the impressive jungle landscapes with the rustic small houses of the riverside towns.  We have a short stop at Monkey Island, a family social enterprise focused on conserving and protecting endangered monkey species in the Northern Amazon.  Here you will learn how the centre try's to reintegrate monkeys in the wild and how their temporary stay here depends on their capability to adapt back to the jungle habitat.

Please note - due to the accessibility to Monkey Island and the unpredictable conditions in the Amazon, occasionally the visit to Monkey Island will be switched with an equal alternative visit. Your Tour Manager will keep you informed.

DAYS 13 & 14 Lima to UK
Free morning in Lima until your transfer to Lima airport for your international flight to the UK, arriving on day 14.

Local Knowledge

Mingle with the locals and soak up the sights, sounds and flavours of Cuzco at the vibrant San Pedro Market.

Just You Cares: Peru School Project

Just You CaresAs part of our Just You Cares initiative, when you book our Highlights of Peru tour you’re helping us to supply vital materials to a school in the rural community of Chocco in Cusco where the children of agricultural workers stay while their parents work away.

The Just You Cares initiative enabled us to support the school in building a new toilet block, providing clean, safe and private toilet facilities for the children. Building began in May 2017 and took approximately six weeks to complete.

On the Highlights of Peru tour you will have the opportunity to visit the school and see how the local community has benefitted from the project.

Hints & Tips

Just You's Jules joined our Highlights of Peru tour in October 2016. Here are her hints and tips to help you prepare for your own Peru trip...

Having just returned from my very own Peruvian adventure (yes, with Just You) I thought I would share some traveller hints and tips rather than write a review. Please note that details are based on an early October departure, correct at the time of writing (Oct 2016) and these are my own thoughts and not those of Just You.

What is the currency?
Paddington Bear, LimaThe official currency of Peru is the Sol and you should make sure that you carry some of this with you. I was a little disorganised going into this holiday and took my currency in US dollars. US dollars are easier to exchange into the local currency than sterling and in some hotels, restaurants and even on some markets, US dollars are accepted. If you do prefer to pay in dollars, always make sure you check before ordering rather than simply assume - just in case you venture somewhere that only accepts Peruvian Sol.

What do things cost?
Let me tell you! You can get a beer for s/10 (approx. £2.50), wine for about s/18 (approx. £4.50) a soft drink for s/6 (approx. £1.50) and water for between s/2-s/9 depending on where you buy it (approx. £0.50 - £2.25). Meals can vary from a light-bite/starter at s/20 to mains from s/30-s/60 (£7.50-£15). I took about £250 and that covered those meals and refreshments that were not included, plenty of souvenirs and sweets for those here at JYHQ.

One tip is to barter at the markets. When looking for that perfect souvenir, haggle for a better price and don’t hesitate to walk away and head over to another stall. We were advised that you should aim to pay on average 80% of the asking price. In some cases you won’t get this, in others you can pay a lot less.

What plug adaptor should I pack?
I took a worldwide universal plug adaptor and this was fine throughout my stay.

What about altitude sickness?
The altitude affects different people in different ways – it doesn’t matter how fit you are, how old you are or whether you are a man or a woman. You are venturing up to 14,000ft at one point in this holiday and the itinerary has been designed to gently acclimatise you to the altitude with you having the highest point towards the end of your trip however there are a few things that may help while you are away.

  • Drink plenty You should be drinking about 2.5-3 litres of water a day (in the first half of the holiday I found this still wasn’t enough and was supplementing this with ½ a rehydration sachet each morning).
  • Coca tea This is available in the lobby of hotels at altitude and worth having a cup or two. Try not to have more than 5 cups a day and avoid after 8pm (you may have funny dreams). I had a couple of cups while I was there and took mine with sugar.
  • Bananas and/or chocolate Believe it or not, these two foods help! They make great snacks while you are away and are high up to alleviate any altitude symptoms (subject to your own dietary restrictions).
  • Headache tablets Take your preferred headache relieving medication, you may find you have a mild headache and these will ease any discomfort.
  • Take it easy! There is less oxygen at altitude so you may find doing things take more effort and you find yourself a little breathless. Don’t rush around, walk at a slower pace than normal and just relax. To be fair, you’re on holiday and there’s no better time to take it easy than when you are away. Don’t worry – oxygen is on hand at the hotels and in the coach should you need it.
  • Eat light Digestion is a little slower at altitude and you might find that a hearty Alpaca steak on your first night in Cusco isn’t as appreciated as it might be. That said, the food is rather nice and there is plenty of variety and something for everyone.

What sun protection did you pack?
You are close to the equator so make sure you pack a high factor sunscreen (I took factor 50), a hat, and mozzie repellent (needed on a couple of days). If you are going into the Amazon, I would suggest you talk to your practice nurse as to whether or not you need any anti-malarial tablets.

Any other tips?

  • Turn the camera off Some of the sights you will see are incredible and while you’ll want to snap away to try and capture it all on camera, remember to take some time to just stop and take it all in. Some of the places you visit will simply take your breath away and I love thinking back to how I felt as much as what I saw on this trip.
  • Take a plastic bag (sandwich bag sort of size) We had a short “shower” at Machu Picchu – sadly my waterproof rucksack wasn’t as waterproof as I’d have liked and anything paper related (which included my passport) got rather damp. Put any important documents in this bag to protect them should you get caught out with an impromptu downpour.
  • Walking sticks The steps on the older sites are uneven some of our group had packed a walking/hiking stick to bring along, if you do choose to pack one (which isn’t essential), you will need to bring the rubber plug to cover the spike.
  • Shoes with a good tread Trainers are fine and I took my walking sandals which were also perfectly suitable. You won’t need these everyday but on Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley optional excursion day, these are better for the grip in case there is a bit of rain.
  • It is colder in the Andes than in Lima Pack comfortable, lightweight clothes that you can easily layer along with a jumper or two and a waterproof anorak.

And finally...
Enjoy it! I shouldn’t need to remind you to enjoy your holiday but I thought I would add it to the list anyway. There are some great highlights on the tour of Peru and I keep thinking about it and smiling.

I hope these tips help with you if you are travelling to Peru in the near future. I genuinely hope you enjoy your trip to Peru as much as I did!

All the best,

Jules
