Itinerary

Meet your travelling companions at Heathrow and fly to Perth, arriving in the early hours of day 3. You will have plenty of time to adjust after your flight with a further three-night stay in Perth. On the evening of day 3 get to know your travelling companions better over a drink and dinner.
Perth is an appealing city with a compact centre and inviting waterfront area. Along with its neighbouring port of Fremantle, it is one of the most envied locations in the world in which to live. The golden beaches, superb restaurants, lush green parks, the broad expanse of the Swan River and lovely climate give visitors a fine introduction to the relaxed, contented lifestyle of modern-day Australia. Experience Perth’s highlights on our included sightseeing tour and see more with a range of optional excursions, which include a cruise on the Swan River in Fremantle.
We’ll fly to Alice Springs, the capital of Australia’s red centre, on day 6. This intriguing town is a hub of life in the vast desert of the Northern Territory. Alice is known for many things, the most famous of which, Uluru, we will visit on day 8.

In an area so remote, some of the facilities that many of us take for granted, such as hospitals and schools, are not readily available. The flying doctor service and famous School of the Air are vital amenities for so many families living on farms and ranches in the Australian bush, and our tour will take us to the telegraph station that is the flying doctor base as well as the school headquarters (subject to opening times).
Ayers Rock, officially referred to as Uluru by native Aboriginal people, is situated in the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. The huge sandstone monolith that rises from the red dirt of the desert floor is a majestic and moving sight and one of the world’s most treasured natural wonders. As we travel here, we will make a stop at a camel farm where you will have the chance to take a camel ride.

Uluru is a cherished Aboriginal shrine, and remains the property of the Anangu tribe of the Northern Territory. The rock is two miles long, 1,000ft high and six miles around the base. It changes colour dramatically with the light and is a wondrous sight at any time of day, but even more so at sunrise and sunset when dramatic skies highlight the waves and crags of the rock. We will have the chance to admire Uluru at both of these magical times. This evening we’ll enjoy a ‘Sounds of Silence’ dinner. We’ll travel to a secluded spot in the middle of the desert, where a formal dining setting will be laid out. We’ll then dine under a star-strewn sky and sip Champagne as the sun sets at Uluru and the Kata Tjuta (the Olgas).
We will visit Uluru as the sun rises this morning. We will also have the very special opportunity to step into some of the caves in the base of the rock and admire the fascinating Aboriginal art that graces the walls of the caves. Off in the distance you will spot the mysterious Kata Tjuta, a range of 36 spectacular rock domes. This afternoon we will fly to Cairns.
The Great Barrier Reef is variously described as the world’s largest living thing and the eighth wonder of the world. It is a stupendous 1,400-mile wonderland of breathtakingly beautiful coral and colourful marine life, studded with unspoilt tropical islands. Today we include a trip by catamaran to the Outer Great Barrier Reef. You will have the chance to snorkel, visit an underwater observatory, take a cruise in a semi-submersible or simply admire your picture-perfect surroundings.
Cairns enjoys an idyllic location between the ocean and lush tropics. It is the ideal place to relax and enjoy the great climate and sunshine that Australia is so famous for. Choose from a variety of optional excursions that allow you to make the most of your time here. Maybe you’ll choose to take a ride on the Kuranda Railway. Widely regarded as one of the world’s most spectacular rail journeys, the track burrows through 15 tunnels and traverses 40 bridges as it clings to the rock face.
Sydney is Australia’s biggest and most talked about city, and the home of so many iconic landmarks. The centre is surprisingly compact and can be easily explored on foot. Our included sightseeing tour on day 14 will show you all the highlights, including the world-famous Harbour Bridge and Opera House, which dominate the vast and picturesque harbour. Other memorable sights include Bondi Beach, Hyde Park, Darling Harbour and Mrs Macquarie’s Chair.

You’ll have plenty of time to enjoy the exciting atmosphere and sheer beauty of Australia’s premier city in the company of your travelling companions, with a range of optional excursions allowing you to shape your experience to suit you. Perhaps join us as we drive into the cool Blue Mountains, a tranquil retreat just a few miles from the city. At the wildlife park here, you can come face to face with some of the native wildlife including koalas, possums, wombats and kangaroos. There will also be the chance to take a cruise around Sydney Harbour.
Canberra is a beautifully landscaped city. The peaceful tree-lined avenues and uncrowded centre make it hard to believe that this is the Australian capital. Visit the government buildings and get a glimpse of the Prime Minister’s Lodge on our tour today. En route, we will stop at a sheep station for a sheep shearing demonstration and a barbecue lunch.
Colonial-style buildings, beautiful parks, wealthy garden suburbs, wide boulevards and trams make Melbourne the most European of Australia’s cities. It has a sophisticated, more formal atmosphere yet is also the sports capital of the country. It’s the home of Australian Rules Football, the historic Melbourne Cricket Ground and the Melbourne Cup. Our included sightseeing tour on day 18 visits the site of Captain Cook’s cottage and you’ll catch a glimpse of the old gaol where Ned Kelly was imprisoned and executed. Explore Melbourne at leisure over the next couple of days – dine in the superb restaurants that line the Yarra River, browse in the huge array of shops, relax in the Botanical Gardens with their unrivalled view of the skyline or perhaps take a tram to the seaside resort of St Kilda with its laid-back beaches and quirky shops. An optional afternoon visit to Philip Island, where you can see the remarkable Penguin Parade, will be available. On the final evening we will gather as a group to enjoy a five-course farewell dinner in The Colonial Tramcar Restaurant, a famous fleet of historic trams that now act as sumptuous dining venues.
Enjoy the day at leisure before your return flight to the UK, arriving on day 22.

Please note: This holiday includes walking in areas of rough ground, gradients and steps.
