DAY 5 - Petra & Aqaba
Today, we include a full day walking visit to Petra, once a fabulously wealthy city on the caravan trade routes to the east. The people of Petra carved their dwellings and civic buildings out of the sandstone to create a magnificent city like no other before or since. The city is concealed beyond a long narrow defile (the Siq) and we will be guided through this corridor of rock into the lost city. Petra is truly one of the world’s most extraordinary sights and a memorable experience, particularly the first glimpse of the magnificent Treasury Building at the end of the Siq. We then drive to the resort of Aqaba for a two night stay.

Day 10 - Cairo
We enjoy an included full day tour of some of Egypt’s famous monuments. The world-renowned Giza Pyramids are by no means the only pyramids in Lower Egypt, and this morning we will visit Dahshur, whose treasures have only recently been revealed to visitors. There were originally eleven pyramids at Dahshur, although only four remain intact. We will see the curious Bent Pyramid, and the fabulous Red Pyramid, which is only 30ft smaller than the Great Pyramid at Giza. Here we can enter the pyramid and descend through a passageway to the burial chamber at its very centre. We then visit Saqqara. Few archaeological sites in the world can compare with this four-mile-long burial site. The magnificent Step Pyramid is the highlight. Finally we reach the ruins of Memphis, the former capital of Old Egypt. This afternoon we continue on an included visit to the legendary Pyramids and the Sphinx. The great Pyramids of Giza stand on a rocky plateau on the western bank of the Nile. They are the most famous, intensely measured, studied and debated monuments in the world. Close to the Pyramids lies the magnificent Sphinx, a huge statue of a recumbent lion with a human head believed to be fashioned in the likeness of the Pharaoh Chephren..
