america's golden west - october 2008

i have finally booked the america's golden west tour going out on october this year. i wondered if anyone could advise on idea clothing to take - daytime and if we need evening wear? in addition, as meals are not included on this trip, could someone advise how much money is ideal to take and weather this is best done as cash, traveller's cheques?
