Mexico is an irresistible country of dramatic mountains, arid deserts and treasures from past civilisations; a gloriously colourful mosaic in which the pre-Colombian world, Spanish era and 21st century life all fit together to create an intriguing experience. If you’re looking for an adventure, Mexico holidays will not disappoint.
The capital, Mexico City, is one of the world’s largest and most densely populated cities - hectic and forever on the move but with much to enjoy too. Visit the Zocalo - a vast plaza for all occasions at the heart of national life. The nearby Aztec Museum will give you an insight into the region’s best-known ancient civilisation, which was destroyed by the Spanish Conquistadores in the 15th century.
Oaxaca is a beautiful city teeming with breathtaking colonial architecture, shady squares, a wealth of museums and ateliers on almost every street, for this is an area which attracts a huge population of creative souls. There always seems to be something going on in the city, from impromptu celebrations to traditional festivities and lively fiestas that take over the main streets for days on end.
Not many miles from the city of Oaxaca is Tehuantepec, a small and charming town which is a worthwhile stop on any holidays in Mexico. The streets are awash with moto-taxis whizzing to and fro, while the daily market bustles happily along and women in colourful embroidered dresses adorn the streets. This is a great example of an authentic Mexican town: tourism is not an everyday aspect of life here, making it a perfect destination if you want to see an authentic side of the country.
Mexico tours will also reveal the older foundations on which the country is built. Within reach of colonial Merida is one of Mexico’s most famous sites, Chichén Itzá, recognised as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in a global online vote in 2007. You’ll see many of the fine stone buildings that have been carefully restored, including the Pyramid of Kukulkan, the Temple of Warriors and the Ball Court.
